I i — i

Letter name: i (say "ee" (short))

1. betű a tanulási sorrendben · 15. az ábécében · #1 in our teaching order, #15 in the ABC
rövid magánhangzóshort vowel pár: í

Hang The sound

/i/ · kitartható · you can stretch it

Rövid, zárt, ajakréses magánhangzó: a száj széles, mintha mosolyognánk, a nyelv elöl és magasan van.

A short "ee" as in "see", but clipped. Spread your lips like a smile.

English-speaker trap: English readers may say the "i" of "sit" or the "i" of "time". Hungarian i is always the "ee" sound.

Olvasás Reading

Ez az első betűk egyike — még nincs elég betű egy szóhoz. Hangoztassunk, játsszunk a hanggal!

One of the very first letters — not enough letters yet to read a word. Play with the sound instead.

Egy hang, más szó! Olvasd fel párban, és mutass a jó képre.

One sound changes the word. Read each pair aloud; the child points to the right meaning.

Írás Writing

Nyomtatott Print: Egy rövid álló vonal, fölötte pont.

One short straight stroke with a dot above.

Írott (folyóírás) Cursive: Írott alakja egy kis felfelé ívelő kezdővonal, egy egyenes lefelé húzott szár és egy kifutó kampó; a pontot a szó végén tesszük rá.

In Hungarian school cursive: a small up-stroke, a straight down-stroke and a little exit hook; the dot goes on after the whole word is written.

Vonalvezetés Strokes: Alapvonalról fel a középső vonalig, egyenesen le, kis kanyarral ki jobbra. A végén pont.

From the baseline up to the middle line, straight down, curve out to the right. Dot last.

Figyelj! Watch for: A pont lemaradása vagy vesszővé nyúlása (í-vé válik).

A missing dot, or a dot stretched into a stroke (which turns it into í).

Játsszunk! Activities

Szülőknek For parents

Az első betű: könnyen látható a szájon (mosoly). Ügyeljen, hogy a gyerek a HANGOT mondja (i), ne a betű nevét.

The very first letter: easy to see on the lips (a smile). Use the SOUND, not a letter name. Hungarian vowels come in short/long pairs and the length changes meaning. Exaggerate the long one at first (hold it twice as long), then bring it back to normal speed.
