Hang The sound

/ɟ/ · rövid, nem nyújtható · short, can't be stretched

Zöngés zárhang a kemény szájpadlásnál: a nyelv háta felnyomódik, mint a "gyere" elején.

A "soft d": say "d" and "y" at the same time, like "d-y" in British "during" or "Did you?" said fast. Not "g" + "y".

English-speaker trap: English readers say a hard "g" followed by "y" ("g-yerek") or a "j" sound.

★ Miért nehéz ez a betű? Why this one is tricky

Magyar domináns gyerek · Hungarian-dominant child Angol domináns gyerek · English-dominant heritage child

A gy a kemény szájpadlásnál képzett zárhang. Angol domináns gyerek g+y-nak olvassa; magyar gyerek a ty-vel, a d-vel keveri, és a hosszú ggy / leg+gy írás is zavaró.

gy is a palatal stop. Heritage children read it as "g" + "y"; native children mix it with ty and d, and the long ggy / leg+gy spellings add confusion.

Írás Writing

Nyomtatott Print: A g és a y szorosan egymás mellett, egy betűként.

g and y written close together as one letter.

Írott (folyóírás) Cursive: Írott g és y összekötve; nagybetűnél csak az első nagy (Gy).

Cursive g joined to y; as a capital only the first part is capitalised (Gy).

Vonalvezetés Strokes: Írd meg a g-t, és megszakítás nélkül kösd hozzá a y-t. Mindkét betűnek van alsó hurka.

Write g, then join y without lifting the pencil. Both parts have a loop below the line.

Figyelj! Watch for: Csak az egyik részét írja le, vagy távol írja a kettőt.

Writing only one half, or leaving a gap between the two parts.

A gy és ty ritka, magyar szájnak is "lágy" hangok; a ty-t 4 betűvel később tanítjuk.

gy is a "soft d" — no English equivalent. A good start: say "d" with your tongue tip DOWN behind the lower teeth and the middle of your tongue up. "egy" (one) is the most useful gy word: you can count with it.
