A a — a

Letter name: a (say "o" as in British "hot")

3. betű a tanulási sorrendben · 1. az ábécében · #3 in our teaching order, #1 in the ABC
rövid magánhangzóshort vowel ★ nehéz betű · tricky letter pár: á

Hang The sound

/ɒ/ · kitartható · you can stretch it

Rövid, hátul képzett, ajakkerekítéses hang: a száj kerek, a nyelv hátul lent van.

A short, ROUNDED back vowel, like the "o" in British "hot" or "not". Lips a little rounded. It is NOT the "a" in "cat".

English-speaker trap: English readers say the "a" of "cat", or the "ah" of "father" — which is the Hungarian á. Hungarian a sounds close to English "aw/o".

Ez az első betűk egyike — még nincs elég betű egy szóhoz. Hangoztassunk, játsszunk a hanggal!

One of the very first letters — not enough letters yet to read a word. Play with the sound instead.

★ Miért nehéz ez a betű? Why this one is tricky

a and á differ in mouth shape, not just length, and neither matches English "a". Native children are fine; for heritage children it is the most frequent vowel error, because a is everywhere.

a ↔ á hosszúságHUEN length

Nemcsak hosszabb: az á nyíltabb, kerekítés nélküli hang.

Not just longer: á is open and unrounded, a different mouth shape.

Mondóka Rhyme

Kerek szájjal mondom: a,
a, mint alma, a, mint apa,
a, mint autó, a, mint ablak —
a-val kezdem a napomat!

With a round mouth I say: a, / a as in apple, a as in daddy, / a as in car, a as in window — / I start my day with a!

Írás Writing

Nyomtatott Print: Kerek has, jobb oldalán rövid szár.

A round belly with a short stem on its right side.

Írott (folyóírás) Cursive: Írott a: balra induló kerek ív, majd a jobb oldalon le a szár, kis kifutóval.

Cursive a: an oval started anticlockwise from the top right, then a down-stroke on the right with a small exit hook.

Vonalvezetés Strokes: Kezdd a középvonal alatt jobbról, kanyarodj balra le és körbe, zárd be, aztán húzd le a szárat és fuss ki jobbra.

Start just under the middle line on the right, go left and around (anticlockwise), close the oval, then pull the stem down and exit right.

Figyelj! Watch for: Az ovális nyitva marad, és u vagy o lesz belőle.

The oval left open, so it looks like u or o.

Szülőknek For parents

Magyar anyanyelvű gyereknek könnyű betű; a hangsúly az ékezetes á-tól való megkülönböztetésen van.

The single biggest vowel trap for English-dominant children. Hungarian a is close to the "o" in British "hot" — rounded lips. If your child says "ah", that is á, a different letter. Model it many times; don't correct by spelling, correct by mouth shape.
