S s — es

Letter name: es (say "esh")

12. betű a tanulási sorrendben · 31. az ábécében · #12 in our teaching order, #31 in the ABC
mássalhangzóconsonant ★ nehéz betű · tricky letter

Hang The sound

/ʃ/ · kitartható · you can stretch it

Zöngétlen réshang, csücsörített ajkakkal: sss — mint amikor csendet kérünk.

Hungarian s is the "SH" sound of "ship" and "shoe" — the sound you make to say "shh!". It is NEVER the English s sound (that is sz).

English-speaker trap: An English reader will say s as in "sun". That changes the word: "sál" (scarf) becomes "szál" (thread).

★ Miért nehéz ez a betű? Why this one is tricky

An English-reading brain links the letter s to the sound /s/ automatically; in Hungarian that sound is spelled sz. So s = "sh" and sz = "s" — a complete swap. For native children the issue is rather the s hiding inside sz.

Írás Writing

Nyomtatott Print: Kígyózó vonal: fent balra, lent jobbra kanyarodik.

A snaky line curving left at the top and right at the bottom.

Írott (folyóírás) Cursive: A magyar írott s egy felfelé húzott hegyes vonal, alul kis hurokkal vagy hasacskával záródik, és jobbra fut ki.

Hungarian cursive s is a pointed up-stroke that closes with a small belly at the bottom and exits right — it looks different from the printed s.

Vonalvezetés Strokes: Alapvonalról jobbra fel a középvonalig (hegyes csúcs), vissza le, alul kis kanyarral zárd, ki jobbra.

From the baseline up and right to a point at the middle line, back down, close with a small curl at the bottom, exit right.

Figyelj! Watch for: Tükörírás (fordított s).

Writing it mirrored.

Szülőknek For parents

Magyar gyereknek nem nehéz. Csak az sz megjelenésekor kell majd figyelni, hogy az s+z ne s-ként olvasódjon.

THE trap for English-dominant children: Hungarian s = "sh". Every time your child says "sapka" with an English s, it becomes a different (or nonsense) word. Use the "shh, baby's sleeping" gesture as an anchor and never call the letter "ess".
